Let's say you're a mimic. On 0:54 to 0:56, what possible tactical advantage would you get holding your staff horizontally instead of vertically?

I'm not a mage or a mimic but maybe holding the staff horizontally helps against surprise attacks from the side or behind?

Almost certainly that's the case.

Start with the basics: staves are shown to be used for directing spells, but are not necessary for casting. Even outside of Frieren's ultimate spell, staffless casting has been shown to be common. Additionally, there have been several occurrences shown where even when a staff is equipped a mage will prefer to cast with their offhand, such as when Frieren destroys the Speigel just after this fight, likely due to not wanting to potentially damage the room. Thus, it can also be presumed that staves also likely act as a focus, amplifying a spells power. Add in how she trained Fern on being conservative in her spell usage, in particular defensive magic during the fight with Qual due to its high mana usage, which is likely the same way Flamme had trained her to fight and how we see the real Frieren defend during the fight.

The Frieren clone is in a 2-v-1. It's on the defensive whether it wants to be or not. Even if the clone is viewing Fern like Lügner was as basically negligible in this fight, she's still a variable to be defended against. Frieren knows that Fern can cast quick, but is shown to be capable of defending in time even when ambushed during the planning where Fern shows that Frieren drops her Mana Detection when casting. The clone knows this, and probably also knows the plan is to either to attack in tandem or close staggering.

Especially coupled with the background. Frieren was holding her staff vertically with the electricity coursing horizontally. Clone Frieren was holding her staff horizontally with the electricity coursing vertically.

Frieren fucking rehearsed it before entering.

"If my spell's lightning goes vertically behind me then I'll hold my staff horizontally and vice versa. It would look cool." Then the Spiegel scanned her mind when they entered that's why they were in synced.

I guess Himmel's cool posing really rubbed off her.

Bro super lucky all that rubble missed him. Even if it's staged for the show, that's gotta be dangerous
